VI. WHEN THINGS GO WRONG IN CLASS

By Leslie Recinos

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in class; some of those situations are: internal disturbance, external disturbance, the class could go out of control, the activity could take too long, extra time, an activity couldn't work and an activity could be too difficult. These situations can happen for many factors. These situations could affect our classes and even worst children learning. We have to handle these situations in the best way possible.

The things that went wrong in my classes were external disturbance, activity took too long and I had extra time. I tried to face those situations in the best way possible.

· External disturbance I had to face every class an external disturbance; 10 minutes after I started the class the oldest student in the school had a break and they made a lot of noised because they were playing in front the classroom, in which I was teaching what I did was teach some new words that the saw and I tried to speak louder.

· An activity took too long what I did in this situation was that I assigned that activity as a homework and my little students did it at home and brought it the next class.

· I had extra time that happened to me once because that activity was too easy for my students and they performed it fast; what I did in this situation was gave them another page to color and I had those pages because I had prepared other pages in case if the activity was done fast by the students and also I did an extra review of the class that I just had taught.

The tips presented in chapter 8 that I followed were: In external disturbance I tough some new words that they saw out of the classroom, like girl, boy and boll, An activity take too long I asked my students to finished it at home, when I had extra time I used an emergency activity that I had prepared that suit the class. Definitely I took all the tips possible into account when I was teaching because those tips helped me to teach better. I didn't use all the tips because not all the situations were presented in my classes.

Well, we as teachers have to know how to avoid distractions when we are teaching. We have to keep on mind that our students are kids that have a lot of energy; they just want to play that’s why we have to make the appropriate classroom atmosphere. In my case, I tried to be a very friendly teacher, funny, sometimes I joked with them, but I always had the relation teacher-student, student-teacher.

The rapport with our students it’s a very important point. We have to set the rules if we don’t want to things going wrong.

At the beginning of my teaching practicum, I was like surprised and kind of scared, because in the first grade that I was going to teach, there were 48 students and I immediately thought: “Oh my goodness, where I came? How I will manage a group like this? I thought all these things because I was an inexpert teacher and I realized that I was going to have some problems, there were too many students and pedagogically it’s incorrect.

I faced some things, once I had an internal disturbance, there were two boys fighting. I immediately stopped the fight and I took them to the principal office. I didn’t want to take them to the principal office but, I had to do it. Another time, there was a kid who always was annoying others classmates. I have talked to her to stopping that behavior, that is the first thing I do, but one day I left my friendship and I told her to stopped doing that and if she still annoying their classmates, I will take her to the principal office, of course I said that, in a angry tone because I wanted to show respectful. That’s were some of the most important situations that I faced.

Of course I planed all my lessons, but actually I followed some tips of the book. Sometimes I had to improvise and that’s worked for me.

When I was making my teaching practicum I had to face with some problems. Once, the class went out of control; because the teacher was in a meeting with her principal and some children started to fight. I had to act immediately and separated them.

Another situation that I had to face was a big dog walking out of the classroom. I started to put nervous because I don’t like dogs; the worst thing came later because the dog was inside the classroom and I felt afraid. But the teacher takes out the dog and I continued the class.

It seems to me that when you start to teach you have to face with many things. Children fight a lot, some can cry and sometimes they don’t want to do the things that you are teaching.

To be honest, I didn’t follow any of the tips presented on chapter 8.
I would say that it was not because I did not want. But the problem was that my students didn’t know English at all.
I had to face with the problem in which English was something new to them. I made my best effort to teach them but I just introduced the topics, explained everything until they understood and make them learn the things I presented them.

Teaching is more difficult that I thought, I had never given classes before, just another kind of classes like how to play the guitar but I had never done it in a classroom and I did not know that sometimes giving the class would be really difficult for many reasons. I am going to give some examples when things went wrong in the classes I gave.

What could go wrong in class?

One reason was the external disturbance.

In the school I went, there was always a lot of noise outside the classroom, I do not know why but students from the others level never were in class they were always making noise running and doing whatever they wanted to do some of them were usually seeing what I would do, and it was a distraction for me and for children.
There was a classroom near mine in which people were always listening to music and dancing, maybe they celebrated every birthday or practiced for their dance group. Once I asked the teacher for that and she told me that students were practicing their presentation. It was really difficult for me.

For me, controlling the class was easy, maybe because I had just seven children, but for this reason sometimes I could not do the activities I wanted because they were just seven or even five sometimes and some of the activities did not work.

The bigger problem in my teaching practices was that the teacher got really sick while I was teaching so I had to stop my class and look for help.
